Murray, 25/1 for Australia Open Outright, No Chance to Win a Grand Slam: Ivanisevic

Andy Murray v Frances Tiafoe live streaming and predictions

Former tennis stars Goran Ivanisevic and Greg Rusedski don’t think Andy Murray will have much of a chance to win another Grand Slam in his career.

While Murray is 25/1 (with Bet365) to clinch the Australian Open next year, the season’s first Grand Slam, the former players aren’t giving his fans much of a hope.

And it’s not like they think Murray will run into more problems with his fitness. Far from it. In fact, Ivanisevic, who is currently Novak Djokovic’s coach, reckons the Brit will cause problems for many of the top players in 2020. The Croat predicted if Murray’s hip continued to improve, not too many would prefer taking on the multiple Grand Slam winner.

However, to win seven, best-of-five matches will take some doing that both Ivanisevic and Rusedski don’t think would be easy for Murray.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Ivanisevic said:

“No. A Slam, no chance. But he can make some surprises, he can go far but to win I don’t think that he can survive seven matches – best of five.”

And Rusedski agreed by adding Murray will end up being competitive going into the Grand Slams but it’s difficult to clinch a Grand Slam when fully fit.

Another British player, Tim Henman opted to be slightly more diplomatic in admitting it’s tough to use the ‘can’t do it’ in describing Murray’s chances at a Grand Slam, but called it ‘extremely difficult’.

He added Murray, however, is one of those players who has always loved to prove detractors wrong and would love to take on that challenge heading into the new year.

Murray, who suffered a hip injury that all but ended his career last year, underwent a surgery and was able to come back. He featured in doubles matches to kick-start his return to the highest level but later participated in a few singles tournaments including the Antwerp Open which he went on to win.

Not too many would have expected Murray to win even that singles title, so he seems to have proved a few wrong there already. The big thing to watch now is how he goes in his first Grand Slam since his tearful exit from the 2019 Australian Open.
