Caroline Wozniacki has announced her retirement from competitive tennis after playing at the 2020 Australian Open and at the time of writing at least one bookmaker is offering long odds for her to win that title again.
The Dane, who had won the Australian Open title in 2018, starts off at 80/1 with Unibet to make it her second tournament win at Melbourne Park. And that could be to do with Wozniacki’s decision to call it quits from tennis at the Australian Open in 2020.
In a post she shared on social media, Wozniacki said her decision to quit was nothing to do with her health problems but a way of moving forward in life beyond tennis. The former world number one has had issues with rheumatoid arthritis, a problem that was diagnosed in 2018.

Wozniacki, a winner of 30 WTA titles, became the world number one in 2010 and remained a year-ending top-ranked player for two years in a row. She endured criticism for not doing very well at Grand Slams, having not won a single title till before the 2018 edition of the Australian Open but stunned the world with a solid showing in that competition.
She overcame Romania’s Simona Halep in three tight sets to clinch the title. That victory came after back to back defeats in the finals of Grand Slam tournaments at the 2009 and 2014 US Open. Her form looked like it was showing signs of returning to its best in the lead-up to that Australian Open 2018 victory as Wozniacki overcame Venus Williams to also lift the WTA Finals trophy.
Since winning the Australian Open, however, Wozniacki has failed to go beyond the fourth round of any Grand Slam tournament. Her best performance, in fact, came at the 2018 French Open where she made the last 16, but a string of poor results followed after that.
Players like Serena Williams, John Isner and the Bryan brothers congratulated Wozniacki on her brilliant career on social media following her announcement.
