Daniil Medvedev has moved to joint third favourite to win the Australian Open along with Roger Federer after exhibiting the kind of form at the Diriyah Tennis competition which had made him stand out in the second half of the 2019 season.
The Russian, who won the title at Diriyah without dropping a set, is now 10/1 (with bet365 here) to continue his good form and go on to dethrone Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open 2020.
While the Diriyah Tennis competition is an exhibition tournament, Medvedev’s showing left not too many in any doubt about his chances at the Australian Open. He didn’t drop more than three games in any of the six sets he played in the competition, beating Jan-Lennard Struff, David Goffin and Fabio Fognini en route winning the title.
And what this has done is brought him level with Federer as the joint-third favourite to win the first major of the year which is less than a month away now.

A few weeks ago, Federer was 17/2 to add a 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open while Medvedev was behind him at 11/1. However, bookmakers are getting more and more convinced of Medvedev’s chances at Melbourne Park and both players are now level at 10/1.
Medvedev did suffer a repeat of the leg injury that had caused him issues in the past and what this has meant is he has had to withdraw from the Mubadala Tennis competition. He has now rushed to France to get the leg assessed but for now there has been no change to any other schedule for the Russian.
Recently, Medvedev had said in an interview he wasn’t gunning for the number one spot despite his obvious ambitions. Speaking to Ubitennis, he responded to claims made by Russia captain Marat Safin that he could become a number one at some point by saying he wouldn’t be upset if he finished his career having never reached the top of the ATP Rankings.
What all this is pointing towards is a major title is just around the corner for Medvedev, and while he will have competition from the Big Three and the other Next-Gen stars like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev, the Russian’s chances look extremely good. Can he do that in Melbourne though?
