Former world no.1, Naomi Osaka has hired Wim Fissette as her coach prior to the Australian Open in which she will be the defending champion in 2020.

Fissette has previously coached former world no. 1’s Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, Sara Errani and Angelique Kerber. Under his coaching on her return to WTA, Clijsters won the US Open twice, the Australian Open, the WTA Finals and returned to the world 1 rank. Additionally, Kerber won the Wimbledon trophy in 2018 with Fissette as her coach.

This is Osaka’s fourth coach of the season. She began the year with Sascha Bajin who helped her win the US Open and Australian Open but replaced him with Jermaine Jenkens after her win in Australia.

However, she split with Jenkens before the Japan Women’s Open and was temporarily coached by her father Leonard Francois under whose reign she won two tournaments.

She said that this for a temporary arrangement and finally decided to name Fissette as her coach. And Osaka, who won made it two Grand Slam titles in a row last year, starts off at 10/1 (with bet365 here) to defend her title at the Australian Open and she sure would hope her new coach helps her repeat last year’s showing.

She played her last match in October at the WTA Finals where she withdrew from the tournament due to a shoulder injury after defeating Petra Kvitova in her first Robin Round match.

Despite the abrupt end to the season, Osaka had a big year. She won the Australian Open defeating Kvitova in the finals.

In September, she won her first title after her Australian Open win at the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka and subsequently won her final title of the year at the China Open in Beijing where she defeated defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals and world no.1, Ashleigh Barty, in the finals.

In 2020, Osaka will begin the season with the Brisbane International with six of the world’s Top 10 players as well as Venus Williams who has been given a wildcard for the tournament.
