Stefanos Tsitsipas v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, with Shapovalov leading their personal series by two matches to one. The Canadian won their first meeting at the Australian Open in 2018, and their most recent encounter at the Miami Masters last March. Sandwiched between those two matches, Tsitsipas won a first round match at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2018.
Tsitsipas Eyeing Grand Slam Success
World number Tsitsipas finished 2019 on a high, winning the ATP finals in London, just 12 months after triumphing in the NextGen ATP finals. Now the 21 year old from Athens is looking to go one stage further and challenge for a Grand Slam title.
He has a liking for Australia – his semi-final appearance in Melbourne last year was his best result to date in a Grand Slam, and he has high hopes that he can go even further this year.
The Greek is in good form coming into this event – he reached the final of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship invitational event in Abu Dhabi just before Christmas, narrowly losing to Rafael Nadal in an enthralling three set battle.
And he has extra motivation to play well in this tournament – his father is coach of the Greek team.
Shapovalov Looking to Consolidate in 2020
World number 15 Shapovalov also had a very good end to 2019, winning his first ATP title in Stockholm in October, and then following that up by reaching the final of the Paris Masters a month later, although he was beaten in the end by Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
Those performances though propelled him to a career high ranking, and established him firmly as Canada’s number one player (although his good friend Felix Auger-Aliassime may have something to say about that when he returns from injury).
Now he looks to consolidate the progress he made last year and to start to challenge for a position in the world’s top ten.
Stefanos Tsitsipas v Denis Shapovalov Predictions & Tips
Although Shapovalov goes into the match with the better head-to-head record, Tsitsipas will be the favourite to win, with the large Greek diaspora in the local crowd giving his side home court advantage. Both men start the new season with high hopes of making further progress this year, the difference being that Tsitsipas’s ambitions are loftier.
