Daniil Medvedev v Fabio Fognini Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, with Medvedev leading their personal series by two matches to one. Fognini won their first meeting in Cincinnati in 2017, but Medvedev won their two subsequent matches, including their last meeting at the Shanghai Masters in October.
Medvedev Looking to Build on 2019’s Achievements
Medvedev begins 2020 the number five ranked player in the world, after a huge successful 2019 which saw him make nine finals, and win four of them, including the Masters events in Cincinnati and Shanghai. He also made his first Grand Slam final appearance, pushing Rafael Nadal to five sets in Flushing Meadows, before finally succumbing to the Spaniard.
Now the challenge for 2020 is two-fold – to maintain that level of consistency, and to try and break the stranglehold of the Big Three – Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer – on Grand Slam titles. The ATP Cup will give an early clue at what sort of form he is in ahead of the Australian Open.
The Russian’s fitness will be tested given he had had to withdraw from the Mubadala competition earlier in December but all seems to be well now. Can he lead his team to a victory in this match against Italy?
Clay Court Specialist Fognini Hoping to Prosper in Australia
Fognini also will look back on 2019 with some fondness because it yielded the biggest title of his career to date, the Monte Carlo Masters in 2019. That though was on clay, his preferred service, and, never one to shy away from controversy, the Italian made headlines when losing at Wimbledon last year by saying that the grass courts of the all England club should be dug up.
However, he has shown good form in Australia before. He has made the 4th round of the Australian Open twice, in 2014, and 2018, and his solitary Grand Slam title came in the doubles in Melbourne in 2015, when he won the event with his partner Simone Bolelli.
