Gael Monfils v Christian Garin Head to Head
The pair have never met each other on tour. This will be the first-ever meeting between them.
French Veteran Monfils Hoping for Another Strong Year
2019 was a satisfactory season for the 33-year-old Frenchman. Despite struggling for fitness and form in the early part of last season, Monfils ended up achieving some noteworthy results. Apart from winning the title at Rotterdam, he reached five more semi-finals as well as made it to the quarter-finals at the US Open, eventually going down in five sets to Matteo Berrettini.
Currently ranked number 10 in the world, Monfils will be looking for a quick start to the year. At the end of the last season, he said that he did not have any plans to slow down. His stated aim was to break into the top five rankings in the 2020 season. And considering that he doesn’t have many points to defend at the start of this season, finding form at this stage can help him prepare well for the first Grand Slam of the year.
Garin Looking for Consistency in His Game This Year
2019 was a mixed bag for the 23-year-old Chilean. He won his maiden title on the tour at Houston and followed it up with another trophy in Munich. He also reached another final at Sao Paulo and reached the last eight at the Paris Masters.
But one feels that his season could have been much better if only he could’ve produced consistent performances. For example, he went 18 tournaments post his title in Munich without reaching the semi-finals even once. He lost out to opponents ranked lower than him in almost half of them.
Garin has a very dominant game on the clay courts & is considered a specialist on the red soil. The ability to cover lots of ground and generate heavy topspin on his shots are his biggest strengths. He will surely have to improve his performances on the hard courts if he wants to take the next step. Last year he lost more matches on the hard courts then he won.
Gael Monfils v Christian Garin Predictions & Tips
This group A tie is heavily in favor of the Frenchman. He has the quality, the game as well as the advantage of playing on a preferred surface. Garin’s record on the hard courts isn’t quite great. And he will struggle to keep up with the power and pace of Monfils’ game. This should be a straight forward match giving France a comfortable victory.
Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
