Alex de Minaur v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
The pair have played each other only once as seniors, with de Minaur beating the Canadian in the Davis Cup finals in November. However, in their junior days it was the Australian who Shapovalov beat in the final to win the junior Wimbledon title in 2016.
De Minaur with a Signature Win over Zverev
20 year old de Minaur had an excellent 2020, winning three ATP titles, and reaching two other finals, including the NextGen Finals in Milan, where he lost in the final to the Italian Jannik Sinner.
Already the 20 year old is ranked 16 in the world, which meant that world number seven Alexander Zverev was wary of the challenge he posed when he met the German in their match on Friday night in Brisbane. And he was right to be cautious as the Australian, roared on by a vociferous home crowd, fought back from losing the first set, to level the match on a tie-break in the second, and then go on to dominate the third, winning 6-2.
Like compatriot Nick Kyrgios he has pledged to give money for every ace he hits in the tournament to the victims of the Australian bush fire, although he only managed two in this match.
Shapovalov Impresses in Win over Tsitsipas
Shapovalov got his season of to an impressive start with a signature win in his first match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the world number six, representing Greece on Friday, winning in straight sets in a little over two hours.
He was helped by an opponent who failed to convert his breakpoint opportunities in the seventh and eleventh game of the second set, and who then handed the match to Shapovalov by double-faulting on match point. Nevertheless, that win took his head -to head record against the Greek to three matches to one in his favour.
He then showed that he is right in form by partnering Felix Auger-Aliassime as they beat Tsitsipas and the Greek number two Mikhail Pervolarakis in straight sets, to complete a 3-0 whitewash for Canada.
Alex de Minaur v Denis Shapovalov Predictions & Tips
On paper this is a very tight match, with the players separated by just one place in the world rankings. De Minaur may be slightly better rested – unlike Shapovalov he did not play the doubles in his first round match with Germany – but the Canadian played earlier, so that may cancel it out. In the end it may just come down to the fact that de Minaur is playing in front of his home crowd, and they may just give him the edge.
Tip: De Minaur to win in three sets: 10/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
