Angelique Kerber v Samantha Stosur Head to Head

This will be the 10th time that Kerber and Stosur will be playing each other in their careers, spread over the past nine years. Kerber leads 6-3 on head to head, having also won their last four matches, all of which came without dropping a set.

Kerber’s Alarming Drop in Form a Concern

What a difference a matter of a year can make. In 2018, Kerber finished on a high, winning 50 and losing 19 of her matches she played. Enter 2019 and she lost the same number, 19, but won just 33 of the matches she played, indicating her early losses in tournaments.

So much so, the German had to give his coach, Rainer Schuttler an axe in the middle of the 2019 season. She will now have Dieter Kindlmann as her new coach, taking over from the interim coach Dirk Dier who had come in place of Schuttler.

The former world number did begin her pre-season tune-up with a win, defeating Misaki Doi in straight sets in Hawaii but had to withdraw from the final there against Danielle Collins. Still, that is better than the kind of run she saw at the fag end of the season where she lost five in a row including a second round loss at Wimbledon and ended the season with a 3-3 win-loss record before the Hawaii Open.

Stosur Aiming for a Repeat of the Season End

A former US Open champion, Australia’s Samantha Stosur fall in performances and rankings has been rather stark. Her focus on doubles tennis might have been the cause or a result of that but either way, the fact remains she would want to try and kick on from where she left off at the end of the previous season.

Stosur had fallen to 139th in the world at one stage last year, her worst ever since 2008 and the writing seemed to be on the wall.

It was only a late surge in her showing that took her out of the mire she had found herself in. A second round at Eastbourne as a qualifier and a quarterfinal at Luassane would have helped but her best showing came in Guangzhou. Stosur reached the final there before going down in a gritty, three-setter to Sofia Kenin.

And while Stosur lost three of the next four matches, those last couple of months might have helped her confidence.

Angelique Kerber v Samantha Stosur Predictions & Tips

Despite the obvious fighting qualities Stosur has often shown and Kerber’s fall in form, it’s tough to see beyond the German here. If fit, Kerber should romp home to an easy win and probably in straight sets too.

Tip: Kerber to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
