Dominic Thiem v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head
The pair have played each other seven times before, with Thiem leading their personal series by five matches to two. Three of those meetings came last year – Schwartzman won in the semi-finals in Buenos Aires, but Thiem beat his opponent in Barcelona and, again, in the final in Vienna.
Thiem Looking to Build on 2019’s Achievements
Thiem was the victim of an upset in his first match in Sydney on Saturday, losing in three sets to Borna Coric of Croatia, in an absorbing baseline battle that lasted almost three hours. Thiem went on to the match clear favourite against a man who has slumped to 28 in the world after injuries and a poor run of form, but the Croat showed he was back to his old form, in front of a passionate and vociferous crowd.
The Austrian had chances to win; having dropped the first set, he hit back to level in the second, and had six break points in the third. However, Coric saved them all, and capitalised on match point when Thiem sent a backhand long.
Now the world number four will be keen to rectify matters with victory over Schwartzman.
Can Schwartzman Bounce Back from Opening Defeat?
27 year old Schwartzman had his best year on tour last year, reaching three singles finals, in Argentina, Mexico and Vienna, with his victory at Los Cabos in August the third of his senior career. He also reached two doubles’ finals, ironically enough partnered by Thiem, although they lost them both.
That run of form enabled him to close the year with a career high wold ranking, but he started his campaign in Sydney in disappointing fashion. with a loss to the Polish number one Hubert Hurkacz, going down in three sets, despite taking an early lead in the match.
In the overall context of the tie it did not matter, as Argentina won the reverse singles, and went on to clinch the decisive doubles, but it was hardly the confidence booster the world number 14 would have wanted going into the new season.
Dominic Thiem v Borna Coric Predictions & Tips
Both men come into this match off defeats in their opening games, so both will be keen to get back to the winning trail. However, Thiem will start favourite because of his better all-round game, whereas Schwartzman prefers clay.
