Djokovic’s immediate priorities for 2020 are clear – to defend the Australian Open in Melbourne which he won twelve months ago, and to regain the world number one spot from his great rival, Rafael Nadal.
He will also be looking to re-establish his dominance at the top of the game because, although 2019 was a successful year – he won two Grand Slams and three other titles, including the Masters events in Madrid and Paris – there were also suggestions that he was not as invincible as he had been previously.
The world number two got his campaign off to a winning start in Brisbane, beating South African Kevin Anderson in a tight match 7 – 6, 7 -6, in front of a pro-Serbian crowd. It was Anderson’s first competitive match since Wimbledon last year, but he still pushed Djokovic all the way.

Monfils enjoyed something of a late career renaissance in 2019, winning his 8th ATP career title in Rotterdam, and reaching the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup. He also came within striking distance of the US Open semi-final, losing an epic five set battle to Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the quarter-finals.
That form, after several years of injuries, enabled him to climb back into the world’s top ten again at the end of the year. The challenge for this year will be to stay there.
He got his season off to a good start on Saturday with a straight sets win over Christian Garin of Chile, a victory that will boost his confidence ahead of the meeting with Djokovic.

The weight of history is entirely against Monfils, given that he has never beaten the Serb in all the years he has been trying. Whilst anything can happen in tennis, the odds of the Frenchman pulling off a surprise in Brisbane on Monday are very long. Instead, Djokovic is more than likely to add another victory over Monfils to his collection.
