Rafael Nadal v Pablo Cuevas Head to Head

This will be the sixth meeting between the pair. Nadal leads the head to head with 4-1. The pair haven’t faced each other for over two years now. The only victory for Cuevas over the Nadal came at the clay courts in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Nadal Warming Up Nicely for the Australian Open

After winning the Invitational Mubadala World Tennis Championship a couple of weeks ago, Rafael Nadal started off his ATP Cup campaign against the big-hitting Georgian, Nikoloz Basilashvili. It took Spaniard almost two hours to win the match. He later admitted that matches like these would help him shake off any rustiness before the big event in Melbourne.

The world number one goes into the new season chasing history. When the new set of rankings come out, he will become the first player ever to be ranked world number one in three different decades. Now he is eyeing his 20th Grand Slam, which would put him on par with Roger Federer.

As usual, the French Open will be the main Grand Slam target for him this year too. But he would surely like to improve his record at the Australian Open, where he has only won once despite reaching the finals on five occasions.

Will Cuevas Revert Back to Lower Level Tournaments in 2020?

After two average seasons in 2017 & 2018, the 34-year-old Uruguayan adopted a strategy to focus mainly on lower level tournaments in the first half of 2019. The move brought him good success as he won the Tunis Challenger as well as reaching two more finals & two semi-finals. These performances helped him break into the top 50 rankings.

But in the second half of the last season, he shifted his focus back to playing bigger events in search of more points. But that move didn’t quite work out for him. In 13 events players post the Wimbledon, he only managed to win more than one match in a tournament once. That was in Beijing, where his two victories came in the qualifying rounds. It will be interesting to see how he goes about it in 2020.

For now, he will be looking to put in a strong performance against the world number one. He lost his first match of the tournament against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets, only managing to win a solitary game in two sets.

Rafael Nadal v Pablo Cuevas Predictions & Tips

There isn’t much to suggest that Nadal could be caused any trouble by the Uruguayan. Nadal is looking sharper after every match he plays as he chases his 20th Grand Slam in a couple of weeks. Whereas Cuevas is coming off a match where he almost suffered a double bagel at the hands of an opponent ranked lower than him.

Nadal is expected to cruise through in this game.
