Daniil Medvedev v Casper Ruud Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 23 year old Russian, and the Norwegian, two years his junior.
Medvedev Looking for Another Win in Australia
Medvedev has won both his singles matches so far in Australia, although he was made to work hard in his first encounter with Fabio Fognini of Italy, dropping the first set before bouncing back to win the next two. He then paired up with Karen Khachanov to win the doubles as the Russians whitewashed their Italian opponents.
Sunday evening match with John Isner of the United States was much more comfortable – a straight sets win which saw him concede just four games. Although he and Khachanov were subsequently beaten in the doubles by Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram, in the overall context of the tie it was a consolation victory for the American pair only.
Now with two wins from two matches, Russia look all but through to the quarterfinals unless Norway can crush them 3-0 in this tie. And as unlikely as that is, what makes that tougher is the presence of Medvedev in the lineup.
Ruud Punching Above His Weight in Australia
It has been a memorable ATP Cup so far for Ruud, the Norwegian number one, ranked 54 in the world. The only man from his country ever to reach a senior ATP final – the US Men’s Clay Court Championships last April – he began the season hoping to build on the form that earned him a place in the NextGen ATP finals in Milan in November.
He has certainly started in encouraging style, upsetting the world umber 19, John Isner, to win a three set battle in a little under three hours against the big-hitting American. And then he combined with Viktor Durasovic in the doubles to give Norway a surprise win in their tie against the USA.
More impressive still was his straight sets victory over Fabio Fognini, the wold number 11, in straight sets for the loss of just four games on Sunday morning. Although he and Durasovic could not repeat their heroics in the doubles this time, Ruud will still be full of confidence ahead of his match with Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev v Casper Ruud Predictions & Tips
Whilst Ruud has been punching well above his weight in terms of singles success in Australia so far, Medvedev is a different level of challenge to what he has faced so far. Anything other than a comfortable win for the Russian would be a major turn-up.
