John Isner v Fabio Fognini Head to Head
The pair have played each other twice before, with Isner winning on each occasion, although both matches were some time ago. Their first encounter was at Valencia in 2012, and the second at the Cincinnati Masters four years later.
Isner Struggling in Australia
Isner, who has now slipped down to 19 in the world rankings, has not had a good time in Australia so far, either individually or collectively.
In terms of individual performance, he has lost both his singles matches so far, with his opening loss to Casper Ruud of Norway particularly disappointing, especially after he battled back from losing the first set to level the match in a tight second set tie-break, only to hand victory to his opponent by dropping his set at the vital time in the third set.
His second game with Daniil Medvedev of Russia was a lot less close, and he slumped to a straight sets defeat, winning only four games in total.
Meanwhile, the prospects for his United States team of making the finals of the ATP Cup appear slim, having lost their first two ties to Norway and Russia.
Fognini Looking to Improve Disappointing Form So Far
The winner of the Monte Carlo Masters last May and the world number 11, Fognini has had a disappointing ATP Cup so far, having lost both the singles matches he has played.
He started well enough in his first match with Daniil Medvedev of Russia, taking the opening set of the world number five for the loss of a single game. However, then his opponent hit back in an equally one-sided second set, and broke the Italian service in the third to close out the match easily.
More dispiriting still was his loss to Casper Ruud of Norway, the world number 54, going down in straight sets and winning just four games on Sunday morning in Perth. He partially redeemed himself by combining with Simone Bolelli to win the vital doubles and the tie for Italy, but he knows that more is expected of him on the singles court.
John Isner v Fabio Fognini Predictions & Tips
Both men have something to prove, having lost their opening two singles matches. Although Isner has the superior head to head record, both of their previous encounters were a long time ago, and, judging by last season’s performances, he is the player in the better form.
