Johanna Konta v Barbora Strycova Predictions & Preview

World number 12 and Great Britain’s Johanna Konta will be in action at the Brisbane International on Monday as she begins her 2020 campaign with her first round match against Barbora Strycova. And despite having not won a single title the whole of the previous two years, Konta did have a year to remember with a win-loss record that should make her proud.

She won 40 of her 56 matches, but more vitally reached the quarterfinal stage of three of the four Grand Slams in 2019 including a semifinal at Roland-Garros. There were two other final appearances too on clay, losing both of them at Rabat and Rome.

What makes this an interesting contest though is Strycova might not have had a solid last seasons – she won 47 and lost 46 of her matches – but she has a hold on Konta by the looks of their head to head. Both matches played between these two players have gone in favour of Strycova, including one at the 2019 Wimbledon where the much-fancied Konta lost the quarterfinal.

This will be a good time to avenge that loss and get on the board against Strycova.

Sofia Kenin v Anastasija Sevastova Predictions & Preview

Sofia Kenin might be unseeded in a tournament full of top-ranked players but the American is one of the players to watch out after the kind of 2019 she had. And facing her is a player, who could give her a keen fight after the underwhelming kind of year she had in 2019. Anastasija Sevastova had faced Kenin last season too but in that tournament on grass, she went down in three sets.

Kenin’s win-loss record last year of 49-23 was her best ever, but what made things so brilliant were her three title wins – she won the Hobart International and Guangzhou Open on hard courts and triumphed at the Mallorca Open on grass which included that victory over Sevastova.

Sevastova also won a title on clay but her record on hard courts last season wasn’t up to the scratch. In fact it was the first year of her career in which she lost more than she won on that surface and that record reflects in the offered odds with Kenin starting out at 1/2 to win it.

Alison Riske v Karolina Muchova Predictions & Preview

It is safe to called the draw a harsh one when two wildcard entrants – see below – face off in round one and as do the world number 18 and 21. Yep, the world number 18, Alison Riske, will be up against the 21st-ranked Karolina Muchova to decide which of the two packs their bags this early in the competition. Interestingly, Riske begins her season the way she had ended the last – with a match against Muchova.

What makes this clash even more interesting is both are at the peak of their rankings – they have never done better than their current rankings either.

And these two have played twice in their careers already with both matches hosted in 2019. Riske won the first on the grass of Rosmalen before Strycova avenged that loss in the WTA Elite Trophy later in the year.

Muchova had a better year 2019, and that was thanks to her record on hard courts, where she won 23 of her 31 matches including a title in Seoul. Riske did reasonably well too but grass was her go-to surface where she won 14 of her 16 matches including a quarterfinal at Wimbledon.

Tip: Muchova to win: 8/13 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)

Ajla Tomljanovic v Priscilla Hon Predictions & Preview

Aussie wildcards Ajla Tomljanovic and Priscilla Hon face off in what will be their second meeting. The first, held in Seoul last year was won by Hon, who is five years Tomljanovic’s junior and ranked 73 places behind her. Tomljanovic does start off as a favourite as a result but Hon could spring a surprise and win a set here.

Tip: Hon to win a set: 8/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
