Garbine Muguruza v Xinyu Wang Predictions & Preview

After a horrid 2019 season where Muguruza struggled through to a 23-18 win-loss, she kick-starts her campaign with an easy first round match. Up against her will be the 18-year-old Xin Yu Wang of China, whose highest singles ranking has been 291st in the world.

The former world number one Spaniard might have fallen to outside the top 30 in the women’s rankings, but a new year could bring out the best in her, and a change in her fortunes. While we are backing a straight-set win for Muguruza despite the obvious issues, it’s worth looking at her recent performances.

Since her acceptable fourth round appearance at the French Open, Muguruza lost six of her next seven matches before calling it off for the season. All that she can take from the previous season is the Spaniard did win one title and that came on the hard courts of Monterrey. Can she go deeper into the draw in this tournament?

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 8/13 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)

Qiang Wang v Ons Jabeur Predictions & Preview

World number 30 and fourth seeded Wang Qiang will be up against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in her opening round encounter at the Shenzhen Open 2020. And this will be their match-up with Qiang having won their previous encounter on the hard court of Dubai in straight sets.

Wang, who won her first two WTA tournaments in 2018, slipped off a tad last season with just 24 wins to her name as opposed to 20 defeats. She did make it as far as the quarterfinals at the US Open but her crushing loss at the hands of Serena Williams in that match was followed by four more losses as opposed to two wins.

Jabeur has never seen the inside of the top 50 rankings before but with the kind of 2019 she had, there aren’t too many points to defend either. However, as far as this tournament goes, she did make it to the second round last season and a defeat here will pull her points down even more. Wang’s a far superior players but Jabeur could give her a fight and provide for a tasty contest.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 8/5 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)

Elena Rybakina v Zheng Saisai Predictions & Preview

On paper, this is a match of equals between two players separated by just five ranks on the WTA charts. Rybakina enters the tournament as the seventh seed on account of her 37th rank while Saisai is 42nd in the world.

Rybakina had a season to remember in 2019. She was 196th in the world in February, and it was until the first week of March she managed to retain the 194th rank in the world.

And then came the rest of the season.

One that saw her win back to back ITF titles in Moscow and Kazan, and then make the quarterfinal at the Istanbul Open. She upped the ante with a semifinal at Rosmalen, and finally showed the world she belonged at this level with a title victory at the Bucharest Open. A final at Nanchang and a semifinal Luxembourg rounded off her season and a career-high rank of 36th in the world.

Zheng is five years the senior of Rybakina, and has herself achieved a rank of 36th – her best – and she also won the San Jose Open last year. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for her, with a poor 28-24 win-loss record and four first round defeats at Grand Slam tournaments.

Rybakina starts a favourite here for us.

Kristyna Pliskova v Irina-Camelia Begu Predictions & Preview

In the three previous matches, Begu leads their head to head 2-1, and having qualified to make it to the main draw with a couple of wins she looks like in the kind of form that could test her superior-ranked opponent. Pliskova’s poor previous season might be as much an indicator as it is a mental block and Begu could look to take advantage of that.

Tip: Begu to win: 1/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
