Petra Martic v Alize Cornet Predictions & Preview

World number 15 Petra Martic will be up against the 57th-ranked Alize Cornet in their second round match at the Auckland Open on Wednesday. And this will be their second meeting. However, when you consider their first one came all the way back in 2010, it shouldn’t really matter the result of that, especially also since it was on clay. (incidentally Cornet had won that one)

Martic, who is coming off a title win in each of the previous two seasons, including one on a hard court surface, needed to shake off some rust in her opener before winning in three sets against Usue Maitane Arconada. She was down a set before rallying back and edging out her opponent but it will only get tougher from here on. At least on paper.

Cornet, however, had a result no different. She dropped the first set to Ysaline Bonaventure before going on to win in three sets but that comes on the back of a poor previous couple of seasons. Over the last 24 months, she had won just 25 and lost 28 of her matches on that surface. Martic might be a better player on clay too but starts off with an edge here.

Amanda Anisimova v Daria Kasatkina Predictions & Preview

World number 25 Amanda Anisimova will be up against Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in their second round match in Auckland. And this will be the first time they will be facing off at this level.

Anisimova did well to start off the way she did, dispatching Kateryna Kozlova 6-3, 6-4 after having played just five matches since the last Wimbledon. Struggling with a bereavement, she returned to tennis with three losses and two wins before ending her season. For her to then come back and make the start she did speaks volumes about her mental toughness and resolve.

Kasatkina was once a top-10 player but slid away to 70th in the world, following a shockingly underwhelming 2019 season. She finished the year on a 13-21 win-loss record, losing 13 of her 21 matches on hard court. And now, having been sent to three sets by Carla Suarez Navarro in her opener, she will find things tough when she takes on Anisimova in this encounter.

Tip: Anisimova to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)

Caroline Garcia v Eugenie Bouchard Predictions & Preview

Former world number four Caroline Garcia will be up against former Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard in their second round encounter. This will their third meeting but the first since the 2015 Australian Open. Overall, the head to head reads 1-1 with Bouchard having won in that Grand Slam encounter.

Frenchwoman Garcia has won at least one title in each of the previous six years but the 26-year-old will be mighty disappointed with how her last season went. There was that title success in Nottingham in the middle of the year but look on either side of that story and one sees a win-loss record of 22-27 – hardly befitting a former world number four and someone who had begun the year ranked 19th in the world.

And if that was an underachieving 2019 for Garcia, lesser said the better about Bouchard. Since making that final in Wimbledon in 2013, Bouchard has won just one title and that came in 2014. Her best results after that have barely scratched the surface of the potential which was on show that season, culminating in an 8-20 win-loss record last season.

The good news is Bouchard started out with a straight-set win over Kirsten Flipkens. Can she now push a far tougher opponent?

Tip: Three sets in the match: 8/5 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)

Jessica Pegula v Tamara Zidansek Predictions & Preview

Pegula and Zidansek have never faced off before this but the 64th-ranked Zidansek will start off favourite in this one after ending sixth seeded Rebecca Peterson’s campaign in the first round. Expect a straight-set win coming up for her.

Tip: Zidansek to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
