Garbine Muguruza v Zarina Diyas Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two 26-year-olds.

Muguruza Back in Her Element?

It’s been a while since the former World No. 1 won two singles matches in a row, but the Spaniard was on top of her game on Wednesday as she defeated America’s Shelby Rogers 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) in the Round of 16 at the Shenzhen Open.

The last time the two-time Grand Slam champion won two singles matches in a row was at the French Open last year, where she reached the fourth round before being beaten by Sloane Stephens. Since then, Muguruza failed to go past the first round in five of the six tournaments she featured in and could only reach as far as the second round at the Wuhan Open.

With 2019 not ending the way she would have liked, Muguruza will be delighted to have started the new year with two wins on the trot.

In the first round at Shanzhen on Tuesday, Muguruza came back from a set down to beat China’s Xin Yu Wang 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. On Wednesday, she started well, but was tested in the second by Rogers, before she eventually prevailed in the tie-break to reach the last eight.

Facing the 6-foot-tall Muguruza in the last eight stage will be Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas who needed two hours and 45 minutes to outlast Russia’s Ana Blinkova 6-1, 6-7 (9-11), 6-4.

Blinkova, who knocked out top seed Belinda Bencic in the first round, had her moments in the match breaking Diyas five times, but she dropped serve nine times herself.

The World No. 75 Diyas was more disciplined with her serve, making just 2 double faults compared to 11 of her Russian opponent.

Diyas who captured a W25 title in Hong Kong at the start of the year, defeated China’s Duan Yingying in the first round on Tuesday.

It would be interesting to see if the punishing match on Wednesday will have any impact on Diyas’ game on Thursday. The more experienced Muguruza will be the fresher of the two and is expected to win this one in two sets.
