Daniil Medvedev v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head
The pair have played each other twice before, in Tokyo in 2018, and last year at the Queen’s Club, Medvedev winning on both occasions in straight sets.
Medvedev Demonstrating his Top Five Credentials
World number five Medvedev has led by example so far this week, the higher ranked Russian player taking responsibility for playing the tougher opponents from each of the teams his country has faced to date.
He suffered a setback in his opening match, dropping the first set to Fabio Fognini of Italy, and winning just a single game, before rediscovering his form to win the next two sets easily.
John Isner of the United States was beaten easily though, Medvedev winning in straight sets for the loss of just four games, and, although Casper Ruud of Norway put up more of a fight, he too was beaten in straight sets.
The only stain on his record so far came in the doubles. Together with Karen Khachanov, they beat the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Paolo Lorenzo, but then lost to the Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeer Ram, although Russia still won the tie overall.
Schwartzman Finds His Form When Needed
Schwartzman, like the rest of the Argentina team, looked to be heading out of the tournament, until an unexpected win over Croatia saw them end up as Group E winners.
Certainly his week did not start well on Saturday in Sydney, when he was beaten by the world number 33, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, despite taking the first set. And then he suffered another defeat at the hands of Austria’s Dominic Thiem, the world number four beating him in straight sets.
With his team’s chances of progressing in the event very much in the balance, he needed to find a big performance against Croatia’s Borna Coric on Wednesday, and he duly obliged, beating the Croatian number one in straight sets, losing just four games in the process.
Daniil Medvedev v Diego Schwartzman Predictions & Tips
Medvedev has won both their previous meetings, and is unbeaten in singles in Australia, whilst Schwartzman lost both of his first two matches. Unless Schwartzman can raise his game considerably, the Russian should win with ease.
