Petra Kvitova v Madison Keys Head to Head

This is an interesting head to head. They haven’t played each other in four years, but in the three years before that Kvitova and Keys shared their six match results which included one at the 2016 Olympics, and another at the 2015 Australian Open. Kvitova won at the Olympics, Keys at that Australian Open.

Kvitova Sends Giant-Killer Brady Out

After a slightly tough initiation in the tournament when Kvitova dropped the first set of her first round match to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, things have been plain sailing for the Czech. Following that first set defeat, she crushed her opening round opponent 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the second.

And that was followed by Kvitova crushing both her next two opponents, Luidmila Samsonova and Jennifer Brady in straight sets, after the duo had individually acted like giant-killers and gotten past big-ticket players. Samsonova had upset Sloane Stephens in her opener and Brady had sent the top seeded Ash Barty packing.

Kvitova, who had won two titles in 2019, including one in Sydney before the Australian Open, will suddenly be very confident of going the distance. Keys will, however, be an opponent to beckon given her sudden spurts of good form.

Keys Looking to Build on First Brisbane Semi

Much like Kvitova, Keys also goes into 2020 with two titles under her belt from the previous season. And like Kvitova, one of those came on hard court, at Cincinnati towards the end of the season. She didn’t play a lot of matches though last season but there are signs the former world number seven is looking good to break back into the top 10.

In the three matches she has played here in Brisbane so far, Keys hasn’t dropped a single set. Samantha Stosur did push her a tad in the opening set of her second round match but that was as far as things went against her.

She has already registered wins against Marie Bouzkova (first round) and Danielle Collins (in the quarterfinals) and with the confidence of having made it to her first semifinal at Brisbane in four attempts behind her, she has the ammo to surprise Kvitova here.
