The top seed at the tournament will be Australia’s very own Ashleigh Barty. Currently world no.1, the WTA Finals champion will seek to redeem her rocky start to the year at the inaugural tournament after a shocking defeat against Jennifer Brady at the Brisbane International.

A practice platform for players, the tournament will be essential to test their form ahead of the Australian Open especially for the national favourite Barty who is on the road to claim the first Australian Open title for Australia in 41 years. Barty remained unfazed by her loss simply insinuating that Brady was the better player that day and was positive about her performance at the first Grand Slam of the season.

Toughening the competition will be the reigning Wimbledon champion, Simona Halep who will test her game on the hard courts of Adelaide. Halep, who was one of the first players to confirm her participation in the tournament, will have the added advantage of her Australian coach, Darren Cahill, who was instrumental in helping her win her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

The duo parted ways after the 2018 season but have teamed up once again.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova takes the spot for the third seed at the tournament. With a busy start to the season, the Czech has already shown a promising form this year with a semifinals berth at the Brisbane International.

Kvitova has had an excellent record at the beginning of the season in Australia with a win at the Sydney International and reaching the finals at the Australian Open last year. Her win-loss record of 25-9 on hard courts makes her one of the toughest competitors for the title.

Wild cards are awarded to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, Priscilla Hon and Venus Williams. However, Williams was forced to pull out of the Adelaide International due to a hip injury and was replaced by world no.8, Belinda Bencic reaching the tally of 12 top 20 players due to play at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre.

Rounding out the field will be Kiki Bertens, Johanna Konta, Sofia Kenin, Angelique Kerber, Petra Martic, Marketa Vondrousova, Alison Riske, Sloane Stephens, Donna Vekic and Julia Georges with Yulia Putintseva and Carla Suarez Navarro heading the qualifiers for the main draw.
