Angelique Kerber v Sloane Stephens Head to Head
The pair have played each other six times before, and the current head to head record stands at five matches to one in favour of the American. Kerber won their first encounter at Indian Wells in 2012, but Stephens has won the five subsequent matches, the most recent of which came in the round robin stage of the WTA Championships in 2018.
Kerber Keen to Put 2019 Behind Her
Kerber did not get her year off to the best of stats, losing in straight sets to the Australian wildcard, Samantha Stosur, in the first round of the Brisbane International last week,
The three time Grand Slam winner and former world number one, has now slipped to 18 in the world rankings, and will be looking for a better run of results in 2020 than she enjoyed last year, where she struggled for form and consistency, causing her to part with long-time coach Rainer Schuttler as a consequence.
She has now hired Dieter Kindlmann, who has previously worked with Madison Keys, Elise Mertens and Ajla Tomljanovic, and she will be hoping he can help guide back to her previous levels.
Can Stephens Rediscover Her Form?
2019 was a very disappointing year for the former world number three and US Open winner, as she struggled for form and consistency. Although she remained in the top ten for most of the season, that was largely due to the ranking points she had accumulated in the previous year. As those expired, she began to drop in the standings, and now begins the year ranked 23rd in the world.
Now she needs to regroup and focus on her game again, so she can rediscover the level of performance that has earned her 6 WTA career titles. However, she will need to improve on her initial outing of the year, after she was beaten in the first round of the Brisbane International by the world 123, Liudmila Samsonova of Russia.
Angelique Kerber v Sloane Stephens Predictions & Tips
This is a match between two women who both struggled for form and consistency in 2019, and who have not started off this year well either. However, the head to head record suggests that Stephens has the edge over the German, and she is tipped to triumph again.
