Petra Kvitova v Qiang Wang Head to Head

The pair have never played each other. This will be the first meeting between the 29-year-old Czech, and her Chinese opponent, two years her junior.

Kvitova Looking for Form Ahead of Melbourne

Kvitova, who won last October the Karen Krantzcke prize at the end of season WTA awards, for the seventh successive year, and the eighth time in all, voted for by her fellow professionals because of her sportsmanship and behaviour on and off the court, is trying to find the form that took her to the final if the Australian Open last year.

She was narrowly beaten on that occasion in a three set epic by Naomi Osaka, but getting there was an achievement in itself for Kvitova. That was because it was the best result the two time Wimbledon champion had managed in a Grand Slam since she was attacked and injured when a burglar broke into her apartment in the Czech Republic.

The rest of 2019 did not quite live up to the heights of Melbourne, and she would have been disappointed to lose her first semi-final of the year on Saturday, going down in three sets to Madison Keys of the United States in the Brisbane International.

Wang, Number One Chinese Player

The number one Chinese player, Wang is currently ranked 28th in the world, although, as recently as September, she was threatening to break into the top ten, after reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open.

2018 was her best year on tour – she reached four WTA Finals, and won two of them, in Jiangxi and Guangzhou. However, the fact that all four of those finals came in front of local Chinese fans suggests that she is better on home soil and does not always travel well. That result in Flushing Meadows was by far her best performance in a Grand Slam event to date.

The 2018 Asian Games gold medalist began her campaign this year at the Shenzen Open, getting to the quarter finals before going down in three sets to the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Petra Kvitova v Qiang Wang Predictions & Tips

Kvitova will start as the firm favourite for this match, between the world number seven, and the Chinese player 21 places below her currently. Wang is a better performer on home soil, whereas Kvitova is used to playing all over the world, and has the greater experience and skill on the court.

Tip: Kvitova to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
