Taylor Fritz v Alexander Bublik Predictions & Preview

22-year-old Taylor Fritz will look to shrug off his poor form during the ATP Cup when he takes on Alexander Bublik in round one of the Adelaide International on Sunday. However, he is going up against an opponent Alexander Bublik, who has already faced him once before this and beaten him. That match came at the Chengdu Open, but it went the distance with Bublik overturning a first set deficit and winning 7-5 in the final set.

Speaking of Fritz’s ATP Cup campaign, it turned out to be bit of a disaster as he lost two of the three matches he played in. The only win came against Viktor Durasovic, a player ranked 329th in the world, while Karen Khachanov and Stefano Travaglia got the better of him.

And heading into the Australian Open after having won his maiden ATP title last year, the hopes would be high from Fritz but he will need to shrug off the rustiness which was on show at the ATP Cup. Bublik started the season off with a win in Doha against Adrian Mannarino before getting tamed in straight sets by Aljaz Bedene.

He is coming off a reasonable 2019 campaign which saw him rise to 48th in the world – his career-highest. It’s also interesting to note Bublik had retired from two of his matches in 2019 due to dehydration and heat exhaustion, so he will hope he can stay hydrated for his match that is expected to be played around 3 pm.

Reilly Opelka v Pablo Cuevas Predictions & Preview

This will be the first time that the 36th-ranked Reilly Opelka and 45th-ranked Pablo Cuevas will be facing off at the highest level. The 21-year-old Opelka won his maiden ATP title in New York last year and finished the season with a win-loss of 19-12 on hard court surfaces. And on indoor courts, like the one in New York, it was even better at 11-3.

Cuevas, on the other hand, is a veteran of 17 years at this level and has won six titles but none since 2017. He played a string of Challengers in 2019, and even won a couple of them but his real test was to come at the ATP Cup earlier this week.

Playing for Uruguay, Cuevas was no match for any of his opponents, losing to Yoshihito Nishioka, Rafael Nadal and Nikoloz Basilashvili in three successive matches. He won just a set against Basilashvili and those losses to Nishioka and Nadal saw him win just four games in total.

Opelka should have no problem getting past Cuevas in this one.

Alexei Popyrin v Laslo Djere Predictions & Preview

Australia’s Alexei Popyrin has got a wildcard to play in the Adelaide International and he takes on Serbia’s Laslo Djere in his opener. In their only previous match, Djere had punished the Aussie in straight sets on clay but this is a different day and more importantly a different surface.

Popyrin is coming off a failure to qualify for the main draw in Doha while Djere made the second round at that very tournament. On paper, 39th-ranked Djere sounds like a favourite against the 94th-ranked Popyrin but his record on hard court surfaces is a poor one. Since 2015, he has won just 10 and lost 26 matches and therein will lie Popyrin’s chance.

No wonder then Popyrin starts off at 1/3 to win this and 5/6 to do that in straight sets.

Tip: Popyrin to win in straight sets: 5/6 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
