Belinda Bencic v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head
The pair have never met each other on tour. This will be the first-ever meeting between them.
Bencic Yet To Win in 2020
Belinda Bencic produced a career-best season in 2019, winning two titles and culminating in a top-10 finish. She was widely expected to replicate the dizzying heights of last season in the opening week of 2020 in Shenzhen where she was the top seed. Unfortunately for the Swiss woman, she played well below her level-best and after complacency set in once she won the first set against Anna Blinkova in China, she ended up losing in three sets to a woman ranked 50 places below her in the rankings.
Bencic along with Elina Svitolina are the only top-10 players yet to register a match-win in 2020 after playing. Following that early loss to Blinkova, the 22-year-old took a last-minute wildcard to participate at the inaugural Adelaide International which will feature five of the current top-10 stars on the WTA tour.
The Swiss youngster will need to make a fast start in the South Australia especially with the big battleground in Melbourne around the corner. Her first round opponent this week will also be a Russian.
Kasatkina’s Early Potential Fading
Just 15 months ago, Daria Kasatkina cracked the top-10 for the first time in her career, and she was one of the alternates at the season-ending WTA Finals in 2018. Kasatkina was the top-ranked Russian in the the WTA rankings at the time, after winning her second career title at the Kremlin Cup and headlining the Indian Wells final in which she lost to Naomi Osaka.
But fast forward 12 months on, she suffered a dramatic loss of form, parted ways with her longtime coach Philippe Dehaes and her ranking fell off a cliff – dropping as low as No.70 (her current ranking right now).
Kasatkina will now need to rediscover her mental and technical solidity which she displayed during her 2017 and 2018 seasons where she won a combined two titles. Renowned for possessing a very unorthodox style of ball-striking, the Russian’s early potential is slowly fading.
Belinda Bencic v Daria Kasatkina Predictions & Tips
Bencic is the clear favorite as was the case against Blinkova. However, she was ponderous and lethargic from the baseline particularly after winning the first set against the World No.58. For Kasatkina, whom despite her handful of erratic displays in 2019, has managed to secure three wins including two qualifiers in Adelaide. It would be smart money to pick the 22-year-old Russian to win.
