Angelique Kerber v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head
The pair have never met each other on tour so far. This will be their first-ever meeting between them.
Kerber Looking to Regain Confidence This Year
A few weeks ago, the 31-year-old German admitted that she wanted to win matches and regain her confidence this season. She had an inconsistent 2019, where apart from reaching two finals and two semi-finals, she suffered many early-round exits.
There were 11 events where she couldn’t get past the opening two rounds. Her performances in the Grand Slams were also disappointing. She was the 2018 Wimbledon champion and made it to the semi-finals at the Australian Open that year. But last year her best Grand Slam performance was getting to the fourth round in Melbourne while going out in the opening two rounds in the other three.
As a result, she dropped out of the world top 10 rankings and currently sits at number 18. Her season ended a little early because of a leg injury, and she could not take part in the Luxemburg Open and WTA Elite trophy.
This year she would be hoping to regain her lost form under the mentorship of a new coach Dieter Kindlmann. In the first round at Adelaide, she won in straight sets.
Yastremska Coming off an Impressive Breakthrough Year
The 19-year-old Ukrainian ended 2018 as the world number 60; over the next season, she won two WTA titles, reached a career-high ranking of 22, and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. She was also chosen as Ukraine’s player of the year for 2019 ahead of the country’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina.
She is well known for her fighting spirit and not giving up during the matches. For example, during the Hua Hin WTA Final, she was down 2-5 in the final set but came back to win the match. Once again, in Strasbourg, she saved two championship points to win in what was the longest final played on the tour till that point in the season.
She started 2020 with a tough three-set loss to Kiki Bertens in Brisbane. In Adelaide, she won her first-round match comfortably.
