Dominic Thiem v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head
The pair have played each other seven times before, and Thiem has won on every occasion. Their last meeting was in the third round of the Australian Open two years ago, with the Austrian winning in straight sets.
Thiem Looking to Improve His Melbourne Record
Thiem has been to the fourth round in Melbourne twice, in 2017 and 2018, and having now developed his game from a clay court specialist to an all-court player, he will be hoping to go further this year.
Last year he won five events, including the biggest title of his career, the Indian Wells Masters, but it was the two finals he lost, the French Open to Rafael Nadal, and the ATP Finals to Stefanos Tsitsipas, that will live longer in his memory.
He had a mixed start to the year playing for Austria in the ATP Cup. Beaten by Borna Coric of Croatia in his opening group match, he hit back to overcome Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in his next. However, he was then upset by Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in his third match, as Austria failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the event.
Mannarino’s Belated Breakthrough in 2019
2019 was something of a breakthrough year for the Frenchman – after 15 years on the professional circuit, he finally won his first ATP title on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch last June. He also went on to reach two other finals, in Moscow and Zhuhai.
Despite that, his best years are probably behind him, as evidenced by the fact that, once somebody who was threatening to break in to the top twenty, he is now 43 in the world.
Melbourne is not somewhere he has enjoyed much success in the past – that defeat to Thiem was the only time he has made the third round here, although he did get to the semi-finals of the doubles in 2016.
2020 has not started well for him, however. He was beaten in the first round of the two tournaments he has contested so far – by Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in Doha, and Andreas Seppi of Italy in Auckland.
