This will be the first time that Osaka and Bouzkova will be facing off at the highest level.
Defending Champion Osaka Hunting for a Third
Having won back to back Grand Slam titles in 2018-19, Naomi Osaka looked to be in the danger of falling away a bit in the middle of 2019. Underwhelming performances at the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open in 2019 were followed by a third round exit at Roland-Garros but worse was to follow.
Osaka fell at the first hurdle at Wimbledon, losing to Yulia Putintseva and coupled with a plethora of off-court distractions for the world number one, things looked to be headed in the wrong direction for her.
The first signs of a comeback came at the US Open where she made the fourth round before being a surprise loser to Belinda Bencic, but the full resurrection was to follow. A title win at the Osaka Open got her going before a solid one at the China Open where she defeated Bianca Andreescu, Caroline Wozniacki and Ash Barty to lift a second title in a row.
She started off 2020 with a semifinal at the Brisbane International where Karolina Pliskova edged her out but Osaka looks to have given enough warning signals here.
Bouzkova Yet to Win Main Round Match
Bouzkova has featured in two tournaments this year and lost in the first round of both. She started off with the Brisbane International where she won three qualifiers to make it to the main draw but was shredded by Madison Keys in straight sets.
And then a direct entry into Hobart followed by 20-year-old Catherine Bellis, ranked 838th in the world, then crashed her party with a three-set win.
The Czech is coming off a solid 2019 though. Having made the business end of the competitions at few of the lower-circuit tournaments, she finally came into her own at Toronto where Bouzkova rallied to the semifinal stage. There were wins over Sloane Stephens, Jelena Ostapenko and Simona Halep in that one before Serena Williams needed a three-setter to get past the Czech.
