David Goffin v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head
The pair have played each other twice before, with each having won a match. Chardy won on the clay of the French Open in 2017, but Goffin beat his man at Wimbledon last year.
Goffin Arrested Career Slide in 2019
Once a regular top ten player, Goffin had begun to slide down the rankings after several years of poor form and indifferent performances. However, although he failed to add to his haul of four career titles in 2019, he did manage to arrest his decline with a string of impressive results. He reached the final in Halle, losing to Roger Federer, and again in Cincinnati, where he was beaten by Daniil Medvedev. It was his first Masters final.
He also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the first time.
A quarter-finalist here in 2017, Goffin began his year representing his country at the ATP Cup where, despite losing to Dan Evans of Great Britain, he played with distinction. He beat Radu Albot and Grigor Dimitrov in the group stages, and then pulled off a landmark victory over Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, beating the world number one in straight sets. Sadly for him, Spain still clinched the tie.
Chardy, Experienced French Competitor
Chardy is in his 15th year as a professional and, in all that time, he has only won one senior ATP singles title, and that was back in 2009 in Stuttgart. It would take him another nine years before he even reached another final, losing at s-Hertogenbosch in 2018 to compatriot Richard Gasquet, although he did get to the final of the French Open doubles last June with Fabrice Martin. They were beaten by the German pair of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies.
His best result in Melbourne was a quarter-final, but that was seven years ago.
His first tournament of the year was at Adelaide last week, where he got to the second round, only to lose to the Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta.
David Goffin v Jeremy Chardy Predictions & Tips
Goffin will start favourite against a man who has plenty of experience but whose best days are behind him. The Belgian managed to reverse the recent decline in his fortunes last year, and will be keen to build on his encouraging performances in the ATP Cup.
