Stan Wawrinka v Damir Džumhur Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the pair on tour. Surprisingly the Bosnian leads the head to head record 2-1. Džumhur won their first-ever meeting in Dubai in 2017 as well as their latest meeting in Geneva last year. The Swiss won their match at Saint Petersburg in 2018.
Wawrinka Coming off a Satisfying 2019
After dropping out of the top 250 in the rankings at a point in 2018, Wawrinka made a strong come back on tour last season. Reaching the quarter-finals at the French Open and the US Open as well as two other finals. By doing so showed that he still has the quality in him to compete at the top level.
An impressive win-loss record of 33-21 along with many high profile victories meant that now he is once again in the top 20 in the rankings and currently sits at 15. His most notable performance of the season came at the US Open, where he beat Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.
He was the winner at the Australian Open back in 2014 and has also reached two more semi-finals. But he hasn’t been able to get past the second round at the tournament in the past two editions.
Can Džumhur Beat Wawrinka Once Again?
After winning two titles and reaching as high as 23 in the rankings in 2017, the Bosnian has had a couple of difficult seasons. His combined win-loss record for the last two seasons is 61-64. He did manage to add one more title to his tally in 2018 by winning at Antalya. But last year, he could not make it past the quarter-finals at any of the ATP tour events.
His start to the new season has been unspectacular so far. He went out in the first round in Doha before crashing out in the quarter-finals stage at Bendigo Challenger. This will be the sixth appearance in Melbourne for the 27-year-old. His best showing at the event was back in 2018 when he reached the third round.
