Venus Williams v Cori Gauff Head to Head
This will be their second meeting, having first met at Wimbledon last year. Gauff was a relatively unknown player at that stage but a first round win there for the teenager helped her announce herself to the world. Gauff had won that one 6-4, 6-4.
Venus Starting 2020 Campaign
After back to back underwhelming seasons for Venus Williams, she will up against a tough first round opposition to kick-start her 2020 campaign. Where she would like to take some confidence from is her early showing on hard court surfaces last year.
There was a quarterfinal at the Auckland Open, made the third round at the Australian Open and then was a quarterfinalist at the Indian Wells Open as well before Angelique Kerber ended her string of good form. Venus did not have much of a great end to the season though, losing four of the last six matches.
This was over and above the struggles on other surfaces and that defeat to Gauff at Wimbledon. This year, she hasn’t played in any of the tournaments, which makes it tougher for Williams.
Gauff Aiming to Build on Solid 2019
With 29 wins and 15 defeats last year, Gauff reached a career-best of 66th in the world. There was a title win too, one she won after qualifying for the main draw of the Linz Open as a lucky loser, and included wins over Kiki Bertens and Jelena Ostapenko.
And she started off 2020 with a win over Victoria Kuzmova, a 6-3, 6-1 rout that should have filled her with a lot of confidence, especially when it looked like she was on her way to another victory. Gauff was a set up against Laura Siegemund in the second round as well before her more experienced opponent came back to win the next two sets and complete the win.
Looking back at Gauff’s performance on hard court surfaces last season, she had made the third round at the US Open after barely managing to qualify for the Washington Open.
Venus Williams v Cori Gauff Predictions & Tips
Gauff has the confidence after having beaten Venus last year but the experience of her 39-year-old opponent should give her some advantage heading into this encounter.
