Dayana Yastremska v Kaja Juvan Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two 19-year-olds.

Yastremska to Gain from Bajin Partnership

Dayana Yastremska was one of the brightest young stars of women’s tennis in 2019, beginning the season as World No. 60 and finishing it with a year-end ranking of 22. In between there were two titles, one in Hua Hin and the other in Strasbourg and a last 16 appearance at Wimbledon, her best-ever showing in a Grand Slam.

To cap it all off, she roped in Sascha Bajin to coach her for the 2020 season and the duo have kickstarted the New Year in style, with the 19-year-old Ukrainian storming into the final of Adelaide International without dropping a set in the first four rounds of the tournament. But her dreams of winning a fourth WTA title were shattered Saturday after she was outplayed by World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the final.

Barty took just 85 minutes to dispatch the Ukrainian in straight sets and clinch her first title on home soil. Despite the runner-up finish, Yastremska would take a lot of confidence into the Australian Open, having beaten Angelique Kerber (who retired midway in Adelaide), Dona Vekic and Aryna Sabalenka, all ranked higher than her in the run-up to her first Premier level final.

Yastremska should also benefit from the services of supercoach Sascha Bajin, who was awarded the WTA Coach of the Year award in 2018 for his phenomenal work with two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Following his split with the defending Australian Open champion Osaka, Bajin, who previously worked as the hitting partner for Serena Wiliams and Victoria Azarenka, went on to coach France’s Kristina Mladenovic and helped her climb the world rankings.

With Bajin onboard, Yastremska will be looking to make a deeper run in Melbourne. She could potentially face Caroline Wozniacki in the second round and Johanna Konta in the third. The good news is she has beaten both of them previously.

But first up will be qualifier Kaja Juvan who herself has had a good start to the year.

Slovenian Teen Eases into Main Draw

Last year, Kaja Juvan caught everyone’s attention after she tested Serena Williams in the second round of Wimbledon, taking the first set 6-2 before going down fighting in a tough three-setter.

This year, Juvan, the double gold medallist at the Youth Olympics in 2018, will look for a better showing at a major and the quest begins at Melbourne Park on Monday.

The 126th-ranked player reached the main draw having dropped just one set in the three qualifying rounds this week.
