Kiki Bertens v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head
Bertens and Begu have played each other four times and are currently locked at two wins apiece. The Dutchwoman though won the last two meetings.
Bertens Fares Poorly in Melbourne
Perhaps one of Kiki Bertens’ New Year’s resolution was to improve her dismal record at Melbourne Park. The Dutch powerhouse has played the Australian Open since 2013, and her best result remains a third round appearance in 2018.
It is true Bertens only established herself in the upper echelons of the women’s game in the last three seasons, but his record of four first round defeats does not make for pretty good reading.
Bertens reached the second round of Australian Open last year, losing to big hitting Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova after making the semifinals of Sydney a week earlier. This year, she has made a somewhat similar start, making the quarterfinals of Brisbane.
The 28-year-old will look to turn her fortunes around this week. She was in superb form during most of 2019 season, winning two titles and finishing inside the top-10 for the second consecutive season.
Begu Plays First Australian Open in Two Years
Irina-Camelia Begu has a slightly better record at the Australian Open as compared to her opponent Bertens, but she hasn’t played a Grand Slam match since French Open in 2019. Begu, who reached the fourth round in Melbourne in 2015, is currently outside the world’s top-100.
She is certainly well below her peak years. As a seasoned veteran on the WTA tour, the Romanian has been ranked as high as World No.22 and has amassed four WTA singles titles with the most recent coming in her home in Bucharest where she won the tournament without dropping a set in 2017.
Begu has dropped down a level and is now a regular on WTA 125k and the ITF events. She reached a semifinal and a final in two ITF events in Hungary at the end of 2019.
Kiki Bertens v Irina-Camelia Begu Predictions & Tips
Bertens has warmed up nicely for the Australian Open by reaching the last eight in Brisbane. Begu on other hand is short in both quality and competition, and I expect the Dutchwoman to ease her way to the second round despite her dismal record in Melbourne.
