Petra Kvitova v Paula Badosa Gibert Head to Head
This is a first meeting between the pair.
Kvitova Dominant in Opener
Petra Kvitova made an early statement of intent on Monday as she produced a flawless performance to beat her compatriot Katerina Siniakova and progress into the second round. Kvitova’a 6-1 6-0 victory was played under the roof of Margaret Court Arena after some heavy rains on Day 1.
The Czech left-hander has picked up where she left off last year, firing 16 winners and six aces past a helpless Siniakova. She had arrived in Melbourne on the back of a decent semifinal run at the Brisbane International where she lost to Madison Keys in three sets.
Kvitova had to forego her title defense in Sydney (the tournament now being played in Adelaide), deciding to rest and prepare for another deep run at the Australian Open. Her best result was in Melbourne was indeed last year’s runner-up finish, and she will no doubt be a huge threat in the women’s draw this year.
Badosa Gibert Produced Similar Dominant Scoreline
It was not only Petra Kvitova who was flawless in the first round, but Spain’s Paula Badosa Gibert advanced in similarly dominant fashion. The 22-year-old dismissed Sweden’s Johanna Larsson 6-1 6-0 to record her first Grand Slam match-win of her career.
Badosa Gibert is a former French Open junior champion, winning the girl’s singles title in 2015 by defeating Anna Kalinskaya. Expectations rose especially in her native Spain, and the World No.97 admitted that anxiety and stress kicked in. She struggled to make her mark in the WTA circuit as quickly as some of her contemporaries. Hampered by injuries and depression, Badosa Gibert could not explain what was happening.
It was during last summer when she finally managed to crack the top-100 for the first time. Positive mindset and a change of coach brought immediate success. She made a steady transition on the ITF circuit, winning one trophy at the end of 2019.
Petra Kvitova v Paula Badosa Gibert Predictions & Tips
Both Kvitova and Badosa Gibert were expected to win their openers, but certainly not with exact mirror scorelines. Badosa Gibert hits a very big ball off both sides, but she is coming up against one of the best power hitters in the women’s game and experience will definitely count against her.
