Naomi Osaka v Saisai Zheng Head to Head
This will be the third meeting between the pair. Both the players have won one match each so far. Zheng won their first-ever meeting back in 2015 during Gifu ITF. Osaka avenged that loss a year later at the Madrid WTA.
Osaka Continues Her Red Hot Form
After winning the US Open at the end of 2018 and winning the Australian Open last year, Osaka was looking unstoppable. But her season fell away slightly after that. She suffered early-round exits at multiple tournaments and had disappointing runs at both the French Open and the Wimbledon.
But she started to show signs of recovering her old form at the start of the year ending hard court swing. She reached the quarter-finals at Toronto and Cincinnati before reaching the fourth round at the US Open. She finished the season very strongly with back to back titles in Osaka and Beijing.
At the start of the season, she reached the semi-finals at Brisbane. Osaka will be looking for another quick victory here to ensure that she conserves energy for the later stages of the tournament.
Zheng Looking to Regain 2018 form
The 25-year-old has consistently been a top 100 player for over five years now. Last year she reached as high as 36. She has also been a very impressive doubles player, where she is number 25 in the world right now. Her singles form suffered slightly due to the high volume of matches she has been playing for the last few seasons. She played 99 matches across singles and doubles last year, slightly higher than 91 played the season before that. She ended the season with an underwhelming 28-24 singles win-loss record.
It is a testament to the supreme fitness that she has managed to play at a high level without any significant injuries. Last year she won her maiden singles title at the Silicon Valley Classic Open. She also reached the finals of the doubles at the French Open along with Yingying Duan.
This is her fifth appearance at the Australian Open. This year she had already equaled her best-ever showing from 2016 when she reached the second round.
Naomi Osaka v Saisai Zheng Predictions & Tips
Saisai is an honest and hardworking player. On her day, she can beat the best in the business and will take advantage if the opponent doesn’t bring out their top game. But Osaka is looking in ominous form at the moment. It is difficult to look past her in this match even if Saisai can challenge her.
