Cori Gauff v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the World No. 67 Gauff and the 74th-ranked Cirstea.
Gauff Knocks Out Venus Again
It was one of the most anticipated first-round contests at the Australian Open this year and it did live up to its billing as 15-year-old American sensation Cori Gauff powered past 7-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in an engaging battle that lasted 1 hour and 37 minutes.
Gauff, who announced her arrival to the big league with a sensational straight sets win over Williams in the first round of Wimbledon last year, was equally brilliant against the 39-year-old at Melbourne Park on Monday.
Gauff looked in great touch at the start of the match, breaking Venus early, but the veteran American shook off the slow start and clawed her way back to force the decider in the first set. Gauff took the tie-break 7-5 and then there was no looking back for the teen. She hit 17 winners on her way to 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over the former No. 1.
The youngest player in the competition, Gauff took great strides in 2019 reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon on her first-ever main draw appearance at a Grand Slam. She also reached the third round of the U.S. Open and captured the Linz Open title despite entering the tournament as a lucky loser. She beat Kiki Bertens in the quarterfinals and Jelena Ostapenko in the final in Linz.
Up next for her at the Australian Open will be Romanian Sorana Cirstea, who herself caused an upset on Monday.
Cirstea Shocks Strycova
Unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea knocked out 32nd seed Barbara Strycova of Czech Republic in the first round on Monday.
Cirstea, who dominated the first set, had to work hard in the second against a fighting Strycova before getting the 6-2, 7-6 win in 1 hour and 43 minutes.
Last year’s Tashkent Open finalist, Cirstea’s best performance at the Australian Open came in 2017 when she reached the fourth round. The best-ever Grand Slam performance for the 29-year-old came at the French Open in 2009
Cori Gauff v Sorana Cirstea Predictions & Tips
Gauff’s all-round play and power gives her the advantage over Cirstea, who has a tendency to hit a lot of winners but also struggles for control at times. The American will also be having the crowd behind her. Expect her to win in straight sets.
