Fabio Fognini v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
The pair have never faced each other on tour. This will be the first meeting between the two.
Fognini Struggling for Form & Rhythm
The 32-year-old Italian ended last season with multiple early-round exits at Stockholm, Basel & Paris Masters. Although, he did reach the final at the inaugural Diriyah Tennis Cup but lost to Daniil Medvedev. At the start of the new season, his form hasn’t improved much as he lost two out of the three matches at the ATP cup and crashed out in the opening round at Auckland.
In the first round this week, he came back from two sets down to win a tough five-setter against Reilly Opelka. Although the comeback will give him tremendous confidence, he still does not look in rhythm and will have to improve his game if he wants to go to the second week in Melbourne.
Last year he won his ninth title at Monte Carlo and broke into the top ten rankings for the first time in his career. But that success was on his favorite surface of the clay court. Post the French Open, he suffered many early-round exits and only reached the semi-finals at one event. The Italian has a below-par record at the Australian Open, where his best showing has been till the round of 16 despite appearing here fon 12 occasions.
Can Thompson Build on a Solid 2019?
After going through a tough end to the 2017 season and beginning of 2018, the Australian decided to drop down to Challenger Events and build his confidence back. He reached eight finals that year, winning three. Last year he reached his career-best ranking of 43 and reached the round of 16 at the Miami Masters.
His win-loss record last year was only 31-25, but he played many more WTA events than in the previous years. Despite the lack of definite success on tour, his performances were encouraging. He reached the main draw of all four Grand Slams and appeared in four ATP Masters tournaments.
It would be interesting to see how much success he gets on the ATP tour this year and if he decided to drop back to Challengers. He beat world number 56, Alexander Bublik in the straight sets in the opening round. A victory that will give him a lot of confidence going into this match.
Fabio Fognini v Jordan Thompson Predictions & Tips
This match is a perfect recipe for a potential upset. Fognini is struggling for form and prefers clay courts much more than the faster hard courts in Melbourne. Thompson will have the crowd support behind him & beat a higher-ranked opponent in the first round. It is likely to be a close contest but Fognini may prevail given his experience.
