Donna Vekic v Alize Cornet Head to Head
Vekic and Cornet have played each other twice and it is the Frenchwoman who has a surprising 2-0 advantage. However, their last meeting was in 2017 in Monterrey.
Vekic Vanquished Former World No.1 Sharapova
Donna Vekic’s last appearance in a Grand Slam was a landmark achievement. She reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time and finished the 2019 season inside the top-20, also for the first time.
The Croat would definitely have tougher hurdles to withstand if she is to advance to the second week in Melbourne, but she kept up her recent record of reaching the second round of the Australian Open for the fourth straight year.
Vekic’s first round match was against the former World No.1 Maria Sharapova who is a having a relatively tumultuous time on tour. But there can be no doubting of Sharapova’s battling qualities despite what her current ranking suggests, so the number 19 seed Vekic did produce a performance full of energy to win in straight sets.
The 23-year-old puts her recent improvement over the last 18 months down to one key factor – her coach. Vekic admitted the relief of seeing all the hard work she exerts on practice is finally paying off big time. But the ‘Happy Slam’ is still the one major she is yet to reach the second week.
Maybe, that could change this fortnight.
Cornet Overcame The Unorthodox Niculescu
The last time Alize Cornet reached the third round of a Grand Slam was at the 2018 Australian Open. Since then, she has suffered four first round defeats, and on three occasions she lost in the second round.
On Tuesday, she overcame a pesky opponent in Monica Niculescu, the Romanian qualifier, 5-7 6-1 6-0 in a peculiar match with sudden momentum shifts as evidenced by the scoreline.
Cornet, currently at World No.57 in the rankings, played at the WTA 125K event in Limoges during the off-season, but was bundled out by Ludmilla Samsonova in the round of 16. Her start to the 2020 season did not go as planned. She reached the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic in a bittersweet moment, but was forced to retire in her match against Jessica Pegula.
Donna Vekic v Alize Cornet Predictions & Tips
Cornet produced a gutsy performance against Niculescu who is a tricky first round opponent. But little in that match suggested she was ready to beat Vekic. The Croat is soaring right now and I don’t think Cornet is best placed to win this match.
Tip: Vekic to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
