Karen Khachanov v Mikael Ymer Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before, This will be the first match between the 23-year-old Russian, and the Swede two years his junior.
Khachanov Made Heavy Weather of Opener
Having risen into the top ten in the world last year on the back of a quarter-final run at the French Open, a poor end of season set of results saw Khachanov slipped back down the rankings, and he began 2020 ranked 17th in the standings.
He then found some form playing for Russia in the ATP Cup, winning his three singles matches in the group phase and then his quarter-final tie with Guido Pella of Argentina, before losing to the Serbian Dasun Lajovic in their semi-final match.
However, he was beaten by John Millman in the first round in Auckland last week, and made heavy weather of his first round opponent here, taking four sets to defeat the world 196, Spain’s Mario Vilella Martinez. Can he find some of his initial form back as he takes on a youngster for the future in this second round encounter?
Ymer, Maiden Appearance in Melbourne
21-year-old Mikael, younger brother of fellow professional Elias, is a former junior Wimbledon finalist. Now ranked 78 in the world, he has yet to win a senior ATP singles title, but his form on the junior Challenger circuit last year, where he reached six finals and won four of them, was enough to earn him a place at the NextGen ATP finals in Milan last November. He failed to progress past the round robin stage, however.
This is his first time playing in Melbourne, but he showed no signs of nerves in his first match here, getting off to a very confident start with a straight sets victory over the Japanese player Yasutaka Uchiyama.
Ymer had earlier qualified for both, the Doha Open and Auckland Open, and won one main draw match there, to go with this opening round victory over Uchiyama. With just seven games dropped in that first round encounter, Ymer’s confidence will be sky-high.
Karen Khachanov v Mikael Ymer Predictions & Tips
Due to his greater experience of playing in major tournaments and Grand Slams, Khachanov will start the favourite for this match, but he should not expect Ymer to make it easy for him, and the Swede will play in the belief that he has nothing to lose.
Tip: Khachanov to win in four sets: 11/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
