Petra Kvitova v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head
The pair have never played each before. This will be the first meeting between the 29 year old Czech, and the Russian, four years her younger.
Kvitova Chasing Elusive Melbourne Crown
Kvitova is in the midst of her 12th attempt to win the title here, having reached the quarter-finals in 2011, and the semi-finals a year later. However, the closest she came was last year when she got to the final, before losing to Naomi Osaka in a close three set battle.
That defeat set her back for a while, and she lost the next final she contested, in Dubai, before clinching her 27th WTA career title in Stuttgart.
She began this year by reaching the semi-finals in Brisbane, and has had two straight sets wins in this event so far, over compatriot Katerina Siniokova in the first round, and the Spaniard Paula Badosa Gibert in the second.
Alexandrova, Winner of First WTA Title in Shenzen
The Russian number one, Alexandrova warmed up for the Australian Open in the best possible way by winning her maiden WTA title in Shenzen two weeks ago, beating Elena Rybakina in the final. By winning these two matches at Australian Open, Alexandrova has also extended her season record to 7-0 so far.
This is also the first time she has got beyond the second round in Melbourne, and she has now equalled her best ever run at a Grand Slam, having got to the third round in Paris last June.
She by no means had it easy in her first round match with the Swiss player Jil Teichmann, dropping the second set, and taking more than two hours to beat the world number 58. However, her second round match with another Czech, Barbora Krejcikova was a much more straightforward affair. She beat the doubles specialist in straight sets, dropping just two games.
Petra Kvitova v Ekaterina Alexandrova Predictions & Tips
Kvitova has much more experience at this level, and that should be enough to see her past a woman who will be playing in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for only the second time.
