Naomi Osaka v Coco Gauff Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, in the third round of the US Open in Flushing Meadows last August, Osaka won in straight sets and the match is remembered for the way she consoled the teenager after her defeat.
Can Osaka She Defend Her Title?
Osaka is looking to defend the Australian Open title she won a year ago.
When she lifted the trophy in Melbourne then she looked like she was set to dominate the women’s game, but she split with her coach immediately afterwards, and made it clear that she was not enjoying her tennis. That caused her form to dip for a while and she failed to make a major impression at Wimbledon, and in Flushing Meadows, where she was the defending champion. She was knocked out in the first round in Paris.
A late season revival saw her win the Premier events of the Pan Pacific Open and China Open. but she could not get beyond the group stage at the WTA finals.
She started 2020 off by reaching the semi-finals in Brisbane, losing to one of her major rivals Karolina Pliskova.
So far, she has enjoyed straight sets wins over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, and Zheng Saisai of China, although she did castigate herself for a childish outburst in the match with the Chinese woman.
Gauff, a Teenage Record Breaker
At 15 years old, Gauff is the youngest player ranked in the top 100. The former junior world number one first came to prominence last year when she beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon. She then went on to make more history at the Linz Open in October, when she became the youngest woman to win a senior WTA title since 2004. In addition she won two doubles’ titles, in Washington and Luxembourg, partnered by Caty McNally.
This is the first time she has played in Melbourne, and she has already made her mark on the event, beating Williams again in the first round. She had a much tougher match against the Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the second, dropping the first set, and then, having levelled, falling three games behind in the decider. However, she then rallied and fought back to set up the re-match with Osaka.
Naomi Osaka v Coco Gauff Predictions & Tips
Although Gauff continues to capture the headlines, she is still very inexperienced at this level, and, against a woman who has ambitions of defending the crown she won here last year, it is likely that her run in Melbourne is about to come to an end.
