Serena Williams v Wang Qiang Head to Head
This is the third time that Williams and Qiang will be facing off. In their first match at the Miami Open last year, Serena had withdrawn from the encounter because of an injury but they played again at the US Open 2019 and this time the American ran past a hapless Qiang. She won 6-1, 6-0.
Williams Storming Through 2020
Seven matches played and Serena Williams has won all seven of them so far this year. That consists of five wins at the Auckland Open, a title she won and announced her serious intentions to go the distance at the Australian Open and followed it up with two crushing victories at this opening major.
Williams started off with a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Anastasia Potapova in her first round match at the Australian Open and followed it up with another crushing win in the second. She defeated Tamara Zidansek 6-2, 6-3 in double-quick time to advance to the third round.
And while she credited Zindansek for her fight, the truth was Serena was never in the danger of losing a set, let alone the match. She admitted she had issues controlling her unforced errors but in the end, Williams came through without too many worries. And Wang Qiang will be a worried opponent going into this match.
Qiang in Another Third Round But…
…but she has an opponent now in front of her who had smashed her in their previous meetings. And against a player like Serena, you cannot afford to give out a feeling of weakness, something Qiang seems to have done.
Qiang will need to look back at her best showing in recent times to get some rhythm going in this match. She started off the year with a quarterfinal showing at the Shenzhen Open, losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova but what will particularly hurt her is the manner of her loss to Angelique Kerber in Adelaide.
The former world number 12 lost in straight sets to the struggling Kerber.
Qiang kick-started the Australian Open with back to back straight-set wins though, defeating Pauline Parmentier and Fiona Ferro in the first two matches. The big question is whether she can push Serena too.
Serena Williams v Wang Qiang Predictions & Tips
It’s tough to see Williams repeat a 6-1, 6-0 win over Qiang but will it get too much better for the Chinese woman? Highly doubtful. A straightforward win can be expected.
