Madison Keys v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
The pair have never met on tour before. This will be the first-ever clash between them.
Keys Looking in Imperious Form
The 24-year-old American has been playing some impressive tennis this season. She has lost only one out of the seven matches in 2020. That loss was at the Brisbane Open final where she went down in three sets to Karolína Plíšková.
This week she has won both of her matches in straight sets. Even though she had to play twice in two days due to the rain delays, she made sure she wasted no time and energy in progress. She won two titles last year, including one at Cincinnati. She also reached the quarter-finals at the French Open.
In Melbourne, she has been semi-finalist back in 2015 and reached the last eight in 2018. She would be hoping for another strong run in Melbourne and break back into the top 10 once again. She would potentially meet the top seed, Ashleigh Barty, in the last eight.
Sakkari Getting Back to Form at Crucial Time
The 24-year-old Greek came into the tournament having lost six out of the previous seven matches. But she seems to have got back into the form by winning three out of the last four. In the first two rounds here at Melbourne, she has won both the matches comfortably in straight sets.
Currently ranked number 23 in the world, Sakkari has been improving her status on tour with each year. After reaching her first-ever WTA final in 2018, last season, she went one further to claim her maiden title at Rabata. The 24-year-old ended the season with a win-loss record of 35-24 and achieved her best ever ranking of 22. But primarily her success has come on the clay courts with her hardcourt record still requiring a lot of improvement.
This match will present a unique opportunity for Sakkari. Her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, is a former WTA player. She is a former world number 43, WTA finalist at Athens, and reached the third round at the French Open. Sakkari, in the last year, has already surpassed her mother’s best-ever ranking and won a WTA title. A win here will mean that she will reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time and will also surpass her mother on the way.
Madison Keys v Maria Sakkari Predictions & Tips
Both the players are going into the match with straight-sets victories this week. But Keys is far superior player based on the rankings and the surface they are playing on. If this match would have come a couple of rounds later, Sakkari would have stood more of a chance.
Tip: Keys to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
