Donna Vekic v Iga Swiatek Head to Head
This will be a first career meeting between these two players
Vekic On The Brink Of Second Week in Melbourne
In her eighth consecutive appearance at the Australian Open, Donna Vekic ultimately reached the third round for the very first time after a 6-4 6-2 defeat of France’s Alize Cornet.
The Croat had struggled with her swift rise on tour during her embryonic tennis years, dropping out of the top-100 as quickly as she entered. Vekic won her maiden tour-level title in Kuala Lumpur at the age of 17 in 2014, becoming the youngest WTA champion in eight years at the time.
However, she spent most of the 2015 and 2016 seasons languishing on the ITF circuit. She has now learnt on how to cope with life on tour.
Vekic enjoyed a renaissance in 2017 when she cracked the top-50 for the first time and she hasn’t blinked ever since. Last year she reached a career-high ranking of World No.19 after reaching the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open, and also finished runner-up in Nottingham and St. Petersburg.
The 23-year-old closed out the 2019 season by qualifying for the WTA Elite trophy.
Swiatek Playing In Her First Tournament Since US Open
Iga Swiatek made her a Grand Slam debut at this juncture twelve months ago, ranked at No.175 in the world and getting through three grueling qualifying matches. Swiatek would go on to make the second round, suffering a chastening 6-2 6-0 loss to Camila Giorgi.
It was a learning experience for the fast rising Pole who went on to produce a terrific season, reaching a career-high ranking of World No.49 last August. Swiatek made the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open and reached her first career WTA final in Lugano.
However, her 2019 season ended prematurely after suffering a foot injury post-US Open which also forced her to postpone her off-season plans. She hadn’t played any match before the Australian Open, but did not show any fitness concerns in dismissing Timea Babos and Carla Suarez Navarro in the first two rounds.
Donna Vekic v Iga Swiatek Predictions & Tips
There seems to be little to separate these two and the bookies have priced Vekic as a slight favorite (4/5). The Croat has better baseline game, but Swiatek possesses a very efficient serve. Vekic though should be much more fit physically than her counterpart, and if it goes the distance she should have a slight edge to advance to the second week.
Tip: Vekic to win in three sets: 11/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
