Simona Halep v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head
The pair have never met each other on tour. This will be their first-ever meeting.
Halep Getting Back to Her Best
After admitting at the end of last season that she was “falling into pieces” due to the non-stop tennis and niggling injuries, Halep decided to take some time off the tour. She only played two out of the Premier Five tournaments post-Wimbledon last year. She also started the new season late, giving herself time for a long season ahead where she has her sights set on a Summer Olympics medal.
Her start to the season was rusty, where after an unconvincing win in the first round at Adelaide, she lost to Arya Sabalenka in the second. But this week, she is showing signs of getting back to her best form. After winning the first set of her first-round match in a tie break, she has only dropped seven games in the next three sets.
The 2018 Finalist at the Australian Open did admit a few weeks ago that she wouldn’t be overly concerned if she didn’t go very deep in the tournament. Only Karolina Pilskova is a higher seed then her in her draw till the semifinals. Considering that, she would fancy her chances much more than she did a few weeks ago.
Clay Court Specialist Putintseva Doing well on Hard Courts
For someone who has almost equal career wins as losses on the hard courts, the 25-year-old Kazakh has done well at the start of the new season. She has won eight matches against two losses in 2020. Putintseva has beaten the top 25 players like Donna Vekic and Danielle Rose Collins during this run.
She won her maiden title on the tour last season and reached the last eight stages of four more tournaments. This run has helped her reach close to her highest ever ranking of 27 that she achieved back in 2017. She also won against the three top ten players last year. That included a win over then world number one Naomi Osaka at Birmingham. She followed it up with beating the Japanese once again at Wimbledon.
The 25-year-old Kazakh does have experience in reaching the second week of a Grand Slam. She is a two time French Open quarter-finalist. It will be interesting to see how far she can take her current hardcourt run.
Simona Halep v Yulia Putintseva Predictions & Tips
Halep starts the match as a favorite. The Romanian is getting in form after a rusty start to the season. But she will have to be wary against an opponent who has shown in the past that she can cause big-name players trouble.
