Angelique Kerber v Camila Giorgi Head to Head
These two have played four times before this and Kerber has won each time. All the four matches came on hard courts, and three of them in Australia. Kerber has dropped just one set across those four.
Kerber Starting to Put Wins Together?
It was a strange previous season for Kerber, who kept going out early in Grand Slams after having added a third major to her collection at the 2018 Wimbledon. Her best showing was the fourth round at the 2019 Australian Open sandwiched by two first round, one second round and a third round exit at Grand Slams.
And when she started things off in 2020 with a first round shock to Samantha Stosur, things looked like they had begun in the same manner as they had ended last season. She won against Wang Qiang, the vanquisher of Serena Williams earlier today, in her opener in Adelaide but fell to Dayana Yastremska in the second round there too.
Which is why when Kerber completed back to back straight-set wins to make it to the third round here, it would have come as a huge relief for her and her teams. Especially her second round victory over Priscilla Hon, in which she was rarely out of control and cruised through to the 6-3, 6-2 win.
Giorgi Surprise Third Round Entrant
Giorgi was lucky to make a direct entry to the main draw of the competition having begun the year ranked 99th in the world and then falling to 102nd following a couple of early exits. She made it through the qualifiers but lost in the first round at Auckland and then failed to even make the main draw at Hobart.
Coming into her opener, was a straight-set winner over qualifier Antonia Lottner but her real test came in the second round. Now, while Svetlana Kuznetsova might not the star player of the past, Giorgi’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over her in the second round would have been a shot in the arm of the Italian.
The 28-year-old might have never beaten Kerber before this but her form should keep her in the encounter unlike in some of their previous matches.
