Ashleigh Barty v Alison Riske Head to Head

It will be the second meeting between the two. Their first was at the Wimbledon last year and it went the distance. The American rallied from a set down to take the fourth round contest 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Barty Getting Better With Every Game

Brisbane seems a distant memory now. It was only 16 days ago, when the unseeded Jennifer Brady stunned World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the latter’s first match of the year. That shock straight sets defeat at the Pat Rafter Arena made one wonder if it’s just a case of Barty being rusty or is it a sign of things to come.

The response was almost immediate and within a week all those questions were put to bed. The Barty of 2019 was back, turning on the style, as she went on to clinch her first title on home soil in Adelaide.

With the momentum back on her side, the 2019 French Open champion is one of the favourites to win in Melbourne this year. And the going’s been pretty good so far.

After an initial stutter against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the first round, in which the Aussie had to fight back from a set down to win in three, Barty has looked comfortable in the next two rounds.

She breezed past Polona Hercog of Slovenia in the second round, winning the contest 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour, and followed that up with an equally convincing victory over Hobart International champion and 29th seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan on Friday.

Barty needed just an hour and 18 minutes to score a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Kazakh to seal a spot in the Round of 16.

The 2019 WTA Finals winner is playing her seventh major in Melbourne and her best performance came in 2019 when she reached the last eight before being beaten by eventual runner-up Petra Kvitova.

This year, the expectations in her country are very high and Barty has so far delivered the good. But she won’t be thinking too far ahead just yet as lurking in the round of 16 is a tricky opponent won their only duel at the Wimbledon last year.

Riske Rebounds To Beat Goerges

One player who knows a thing or two about taking a match deep and even coming on top in those tough three-setters is Alison Riske. In 2019, she was involved in 24 three-setters and finished with a 14-10 record.

This year at the Australian Open, the 29-year-old has already featured in two of those and passed with flying colours. The first of them was in the first round against China’s Wang Yafan on Tuesday. The three-hour affair finally ended with the 18th seed American winning the contest 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-3.

The next of those tests came in the third round on Friday, when Riske rallied from a set down to edge past Germany’s Julia Goerges. The 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win came in two hours and 16 minutes, taking the American into the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.

Not that her opponent in the next round is any stranger to tough three-setters, in fact she excelled in them in 2019, finishing the year with a 19-7 record. However, it was the American who knocked out the Aussie in three at the All England Club.

Coming off her best season, which saw her claim the title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, reach the final in Wuhan and the quarterfinal at Wimbledon, Riske will be looking to achieve even greater heights in 2020 and the start hasn’t been all that bad as she reached the quarterfinals of Brisbane International and is now in the round of 16 of the year’s first major.

Ashleigh Barty v Alison Riske Predictions & Tips

Barty is in great touch and has dismissed the previous two opponents with ease, but things won’t be that simple on Sunday. Riske will give the Aussie a tough time; however, expect the local favourite to win in three.
