Simona Halep v Elise Mertens Head to Head

There have been three matches between Simona Halep and Elise Mertens before this and the Romanian holds bit of an edge at 2-1. However, both of Halep’s wins came on clay while Mertens won their only encounter on the hard court of Doha last season, which could be a factor in this one.

Halep Rolling on after Indifferent Start

After a first round bye and defeating Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets at the Adelaide International in the second week of the season, Halep fell to a crushing 6-4, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals there. Such was her form even towards the end of the previous season that amidst Serena Williams’ 24th title, Naomi Osaka’s defence and Ash Barty’s maiden one at home, Halep was often forgotten.

Now, she looks like she has gotten her mojo back, having won all her three rounds at the Australian Open very comfortably.

There were early troubles against Jennifer Brady in the first round but she steamrolled her 7-6, 6-1 once she got her rhythm and followed it with eases past Harriet Dart and Yulia Putintseva in the next two matches. This takes her to the fourth round which is where she had been beaten by Serena Williams in 2019.

Mertens Consistent but Not Getting the Distance

A semifinalist at the 2018 Australian Open, Elise Mertens is 7-2 on win-loss this season so far. And those performances have been quite consistent across the three tournaments she has participated in so far. Which means she has been winning the early rounds but not been able to get past the latter stages.

Like at Shenzhen, she won a couple of rounds before losing to Elena Rybakina. Then again at Hobart, she overcame Christina McHale and Viktoria Kuzmova but lost to Heather Watson, at the quarterfinal stage yet again.

Credit to Mertens, she has managed to keep going and made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open as well, which has included a win over Watson in the second round and Catherine Bellis in a humdinger in the third. She overcame the loss of the second set tie-breaker to blank Bellis 6-0 in the third.

Simona Halep v Elise Mertens Predictions & Tips

Halep will know Mertens is a very dangerous opponent especially given she has already beaten the Romanian once on hard court surface. She starts a favourite at 4/7 but we are looking at a gritty encounter that goes the distance, at least in terms of the games played.
