Garbine Muguruza v Kiki Bertens Head to Head
The pair have met five times on the tour so far. Bertens leads the tally with 3-2.
Bertens won their first three meetings whereas Muguruza has won on the last two occasions. On one occasion in Sydney last year, Bertens received a walkover in the round of 16 as Muguruza withdrew due to an illness.
Muguruza Upset World Number Five Svitolina in the Third Round
Muguruza has been in top form at the start of the new season. She reached the semi-finals at the Shenzhen Open and was looking impressive at Hobart before having to withdraw in the last eight. This week in Melbourne she has been solid except for a couple of lapses of concentration.
Her most impressive performance of the week came in the third round where she got the better of world number five Elina Svitolina in straight sets. This would boost her confidence a lot after a below-par second half of the last season, so much so she went into this tournament as an unseeded player.
She started 2019 brightly and reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the French Open. She also made it to the last eight at the Indian Wells and Hua Tin. In April, she won her seventh WTA title at Monterrey.
But her season faded post the clay-court swing. Few injuries and inconsistent form meant that she only played in six tournaments post the Roland Garros. Going out in the opening round in five of them.
Best Ever Showing for Bertens in Melbourne
Despite playing at the Australian Open seven times prior to this year, the player from the Netherlands had never gone beyond the third round. With three straight-set victories this week, Bertens has achieved her best ever run at the event.
The Dutchwoman has won seven titles in the last three seasons and has achieved a new career-best ranking in each season. Last year she was world number four at one point in time.
One thing that she would be looking to improve this year would be her Grand Slam record. She has only reached one semi-final and one-quarter final at the majors so far in her career. It would be interesting to see how far she can go in the second week in Melbourne.
Garbine Muguruza v Kiki Bertens Predictions & Tips
It is likely to be a close contest with both the players in good form. Muguruza will start as the slight favorite considering the big win she is coming off from and the fact that she is a better hard court player than her opponent.
Tip: Muguruza to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
