Dominic Thiem v Gael Monfils Head to Head
Thiem and Monfils have played each other five times, and remarkably Monfils has never beaten the Austrian in all five meetings.
This will be their second match at Grand Slam level with their most recent match coming at French Open in 2019 where Thiem won in straight sets.
Thiem Has Never Reached The Last Eight in Melbourne
It is safe to assume that Dominic Thiem does take great pleasure in playing in drama-filled matches and his last two rounds have been nothing short of it.
After taking out Adrian Mannarino in straight sets in the first round, he was pushed to the limit by Australia’s Alex Bolt, ultimately prevailing in a mammoth five-setter. Thiem was helped to a large extent by Bolt’s fatigue since the wildcard was himself involved a five-set of his own in his opener.
The Austrian then proceeded to eliminate the number 29 seed Taylor Fritz of the United States in four sets in another tussle, saving six of seven break point chances and reeled of 20 aces from the 22-year-old’s serve.
The two-time French Open runner-up has now equaled his career-best appearance at Melbourne Park, having previously reached the fourth round in 2017 and 2018.
Monfils is a Former Quarter-Finalist in Australia
This is the fourth time Gael Monfils will be playing in the fourth round of the Australian Open, but he has only managed to progress unscathed once, in 2016, when he reached the last eight and lost to an in-form Milos Raonic.
Monfils will have another shot to reach a second quarterfinal at the Australian Open after dismissing Ernests Gulbis in the third round in straight sets. The Frenchman who is well-known for his flair and entertainment, and has been going about his business quietly, without any hiccups and without anyone taking notice.
At the US Open last September, the 33-year-old also reached the quarterfinals and he is now looking to replicate that feat of reaching back-to-back for the first time at Grand Slam level.
Dominic Thiem v Gael Monfils Predictions & Tips
Thiem has a perfect 5-0 record against his fourth round opponent Monfils, but three of those meetings took place on his beloved clay. However, the Austrian is now an established all-type and all-court player having won a Masters 1000 hard-court title in Indian Wells last year. This is a match-up just doesn’t favor the Frenchman and it is so because Thiem’s muscular tennis from the back of the court does not allow Monfils to get out from the comfort zone. But seeing how Thiem has sometimes struggled at fluctuating points in the matches in the first week, Monfils should push him close.
Tip: Five sets in the match: 5/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
